A pilot car—also called an escort vehicle—is used to guide oversized loads safely on public roads. These vehicles help prevent accidents, alert other drivers to the load’s presence, and ensure compliance with state transportation laws.
What is a pilot car?
Pole Cars: Specialized lead vehicles equipped with height poles to test clearances for bridges, power lines, and overpasses before the load arrives.
Lead Vehicles: Drive ahead of the load to scout the road, alert oncoming traffic, and guide the trucker through tight turns, low bridges, and hazards.
Chase Cars: Follow behind the load to protect it from rear-end collisions and provide updates to the lead and truck driver.
Trailer Operators/Steerman:
All of our vehicles are equipped with amber lights, “Oversize Load” signage, safety gear, and radios to maintain communication at all times.
Types of Pilot Vehicles:
If your shipment exceeds legal size or weight limits; you likely need a pilot car. Some states may require one lead vehicle, one chase car, or both. Others may also require a pole car to test clearances in advance.
Each state is different; know each state’s requirements. For example, some states may not consider a rear trailer operator to be a pilot car.
